PullPal Anchor
A winch is a tool that can be invaluable when you need it. If you're stuck in the snow, sand, or mud you can pull yourself out. If there's a tree down in the road one can use a winch and straps to easily move it. But all of these tasks require an anchor point for the winch. Most winches have a cable between 60 and 100 feet.
If you're lucky enough to always get stuck with a tree less than 100 feet away in the correct direction then you do not need a PullPal and you should also invest in lottery tickets. We go on a lot of trips in the desert where there aren't many trees or suitable anchor points. There is no benefit to owning a $1,000 plus winch and bumper combination if you have nothing to hook it to when you're stuck. The PullPal solves this issue.
The appropriate size for Jeep vehicles is the RW 11,000 and can be purchased at www.pullpal.com. When folded in the optional case it measures 45" x 7" and weighs 36 pounds. Most of the time I store it on the back seat and use the middle seat belt to secure it. In this position it does cover approximately the whole seat. Another option is to either make your own or purchase a mount from www.fourtreks.com to get the pull pal out of the vehicle and onto a bumper or roof rack.
At $359.95 the Pull Pal is not an inexpensive accessory, but like any good tool it does a very good job at what it's designed to do. I have been stuck in deep snow without a tree in sight and the Pull Pal performs flawlessly. Once the blade is set it will dig down as you apply tension with the winch till it grabs, and once it does you're on your way to being unstuck. Compared to digging a hole with the collapsible shovel and burying the spare tire as an anchor point the Pull Pal requires next to no effort.
If you travel alone, or with only one vehicle I strongly recommend purchasing a Pull Pal. It's a tool that one hopes they will never need, but when you do you will be glad you have it. The insurance and peace of mind for overland travel is invaluable.
